I feel that the future is in generosity.
When I found out about the Creative Commons licenses in 2005, it was everything I could have asked for. I don't just create things for people to keep to themselves - I want them to be inspired by it and even use it for themselves!
I'm a big fan of the open-source movement. I like sharing, and I like making use of the creativity of others. I feel that there's a lot of good that can come from reuse and remixing.
I have devoted myself to open source. The games I make use rules that have been opened by others. I write books based off of public domain works (for instance, the Oz books). I've even created video games using open source engines.
I don't just use this stuff. I also make my own stuff available to others. While I don't open everything I create, you can bet that the vast majority of what I produce will be under some form of an open licence.
Heroes of Oz RPG uses the Fudge system, and will feature a compatibility license.
My first novel, The Dark Prophecy of Oz, is under Creative Commons Attribution, and is the first Oz book to bear a Creative Commons license.
My videos on YouTube bear some form of Creative Commons license, most of them Attribution Only.
Why do this? Aren't I afraid of some mega-corporation taking my stuff and making lots of money off of it? Won't I lose money giving away my stuff? What if someone is more popular with my stuff than I am?
Fact is, I'm not really all that worried. No matter what happens, I have to be credited when my stuff is passed around or used. If someone else is successful, I'm successful, too. I get free marketing. And besides, I also get a sense of satisfaction when someone thinks my stuff is good enough to use.
Like I said at the beginning, I create for it to be used as well as enjoyed.
I love generosity, and I love being generous. And if you use some of my stuff, let me know. I want to see it, and I'll pass it on to others for them to see.
